MNAs on Finance and Revenue Committee have visited FPCCI: Irfan Iqbal Sheikh

Karachi, January 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):Mr. Irfan Iqbal Sheikh, President FPCCI, has apprised that the MNAs on the high-powered Standing Committee of National Assembly of Pakistan on Finance and Revenue have visited FPCCI for detailed consultations and setting a direction for the parliamentarians to influence the economic, monetary, fiscal, industrial, trade, taxation and social-sector policies in the broader national interest.

While welcoming the high-profile delegation, Mr. Irfan Iqbal Sheikh said that the business, industry and trade community has been largely neglected by the lawmakers; and, more so, in the realm of economic policymaking for industrialization, import substitution and broadening of the tax-base.

Mr. Irfan Iqbal Sheikh expressed his profound concerns that all the avenues that can earn the much needed foreign exchange are showing a downward trajectory; namely, exports and remittances. It is pertinent to note that the delegation was led by Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue; and, included the likes of Dr. Nafisa Shah, Dr. Fehmida Mirza and Ms. Wajiha Qamar.

Mr. Suleman Chawla, SVP FPCCI, categorically stated that FPCCI has nothing to do with the politics and is ever-willing to support the positive and growth-oriented initiatives of the government. He, however, demanded that representatives of the apex body should be given a seat in all federal and provincial policymaking institutions and bodies – as presentations and occasional consultative sessions are not enough, until and unless the business community can participate in governmental policymaking forums through their experiential inputs.

MNA Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh apprised FPCCI that the parliamentarians are well aware of the critical economic and financial situation of the country. He promised that his committee will always be available for FPCCI to relay their complaints, issues, recommendations and proposals to all the relevant ministries and institutions. Moreover, he sought the assistance of FPCCI in research and evidence-based sectorial proposals; so that, they can approach the ministries with the solutions.

MNA Dr. Nafisa Shah said that their committee will create a mechanism for the regular liaison with the apex body; and, proposed that women, minorities and other vulnerable segments should be taken onboard by FPCCI for inclusive economic growth. MNA Dr. Fehmida Mirza expressed her optimism that the resilience of Pakistan’s business community will help the government to get out of the current economic situation and get on the path of sustainable economic development. She also assured that their committee will support FPCCI for the signing of apolitical charter of economy.
